The years tear by like the wheels of getaway cars
All the lives we swore we’d live
Are now just insects trapped in jars
Now we’re wishing on a tax return
To pay off our biggest debts
This ain’t life, this is a hold pattern
These streets still lead to where we earned our names
We never meant to get so lost
Or forget our way
But the crows swallowed our breadcrumbs
Our trails of string line their nests
These old dreams are the scraps we have left
We hold on
With shaking hands
To all those things
We hope will last
Sometimes we’re breathing out and in
Stumbling through the day to day of these lives that we live
It’s not the money in your wallet
You can’t buy your way out of this
It’s heart that matters in the end
Some friendships are just knives we use to cut old ties
Or the lines that they’re secured to
Seem to rot away and die
There are others that we cling to
Walking away would spell defeat
We should follow our hearts wherever they may lead
We hold on
With shaking hands
To all those things
We hope will last
Sometimes we’re breathing out and in
Stumbling through the day to day of these lives that we live
It’s not the money in your wallet
You can’t buy your way out of this
It’s heart that matters in the end
All these neon lights
Are a cancer on our time
Consuming
Precious hours of daylight
We slave for years
Fighting back the fear
That these routines
Will be the legacy we leave
Sometimes we’re breathing out and in
Stumbling through the day to day of these lives that we live
It’s not the money in your wallet
You can’t buy your way out of this
It’s heart that matters in the end
